Hi, this is Las Vegas Dave and I’m coming to you today with Module one of our Small and Home-Based Business Marketing Tips.
In this module we will show how to generate business from SPECIFIC targeted areas around your brick and morter, or home-based business! In later modules we will teach you how to drive traffic to your website and maximize your marketing dollar. There are two places that EVERYONE checks everyday. Their mailbox, and the INTERNET. This module will focus on how to effectively market using direct mail campaigns.
So, first things first, you need to know your target market. What income group are they in, what do they do for a living, and which groups are going to get you the types of clients or customers that will be MOST profitable for your business. Pick your best possible clients, because its not harder to market to the right clients than it is to market to the wrong potentials.
Okay, once you KNOW the demographics of your potential customers and clients, Buy your list. Target specific zip codes if you’d like. Make sure you purchase a good list with names and addresses and phone numbers. You shouldn’t be paying more than .05 a name. If you need a good lead resource, contact us, and we will give you a few good lead sources to buy from.
Next you have to design the marketing pieces that you will use. Use a marketing company or graphic design. Use words and advertisements that will get your potential customer to take action. Your LOGO and WEBSITE should be on EVERYTHING you send out, no exceptions. Use your brand in everything you send out!
I highly recommend using the large 5 ½ by 11 postcards because they are big and get seen and they DONT get lost behind all the other mail. Letter series with timeframes to take action are also very successful. I’m sure you have seen the big Bed Bath and Beyond postcards that we all get every month. Why do they do it, because IT WORKS!
Design at least a 6 month campaign. Know what pieces you are going to send out each month for a 6 month period, that way you can write yourself notes on your calendar, and you don't have to think about it every month, you can just follow through.
Don't burn your marketing dollars, don't overpay for any one of these steps. Make the most out of it. Good marketing should give you at least a 5-10 times the return on your investment!
Next, submit your list and your designs to a printer. A good printer will print in HIGH quality and will handle the sorting and shipping for you. Get them all the marketing pieces you are going to send for the next 6 months, and they will keeper if you wish, but do not overpay. Make sure they include your branding, and include the slogans, them on file so that you can just tell them which pieces to print and ship on specific dates each month. You shouldn't be paying more than .40-.50 per piece including shipping. Once again, if you need some good referrals, let us know and we can provide those for you.
Send your customized marketing pieces every month…WITHOUT FAIL. For best results, at least a thousand pieces at a time. Consistency is the key with direct mail. Change up the pieces you are sending, but make sure that they all have the same look and feel so that it reinforces your branding.
You may hit a home run right out of the gates with your very first mailer and you may not. Don’t worry if you don’t, as long as you are consistent, statistics show that you will receive at least a 1% return. I have seen companies get a 3-5 percent return and even up to 9% in one case.
